昂立外語【新概念培訓】分享expect這個小詞。在我們新概念二Lesson 7 Too late課文中有這樣一句話：
They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa.
他們正期待從南非來的一個裝著鉆石的貴重包裹。
這里的expect的意思大家應該很熟悉了，沒錯就是期待、等待，它的結構也信手拈來：expect sth./ expect sb to do sth.接下來，讓我們一起來看看下面新聞報道中出現的expect作何解釋。大家對威廉王子和凱特王妃一定不陌生，11年那場英國皇家世紀婚禮歷歷在目，而在2014年下半年，凱特王妃又懷了二胎，收到了媒體和民眾的廣泛關注，Reuters路透社這樣寫道：
William, grandson of Queen Elizabeth and second-in-line to the throne, announced last month that Kate was expecting a second baby to join Prince George who was born in July last year, but no date for the birth was disclosed at the time.
這里的expect如果解釋為期待、等待似乎也很說得通，但其實并不精準，因為這樣的解釋并沒有表現出已經懷有身孕這一狀態，那究竟該如何理解最好呢？Webster上有這樣一條釋義：to be pregnant; await the birth of one's child—used in progressive tenses，也就是說，be expecting可以表示懷孕，或者期待（嬰兒）出生的意思。在最近還有一個很轟動的新聞，就是中國網球女王李娜懷孕了！那我們是不是就可以把expect的這個用法用起來了呢，Li Na is expecting a baby~
其實expect的這一用法在我們新概念三的課本中也有出現，就是Lesson 45 The power of the press這篇課文，那一大家子已經有了五個孩子，沒想到第六胎一生就是一五胞胎，They were expecting their sixth child and were faced with even more pressing economic problems.
