昂立外語【新概念培訓】分享sacred這一詞。這個詞的意思是神圣的。乍一看這個名詞可能就會覺得這個詞肯定用在和教堂等等有關的地方，但其實這個詞可以用的范圍很廣。
sacred在新三課文里面首次出現是在Lesson 3 An unknown goddess：
In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found.
這里的神圣的，即指宗教上的神圣，不是任何人都能接近的地方。
sacred第二次出現在Lesson 45 The Power of the Press：
Acting on the contention that facts are sacred, reporters can cause untold suffering to individuals by publishing details about their private lives.
前半句話可以翻譯成“按照事實至上的觀點”，這里的sacred和宗教基本沒有關系，就約等于very important。
所以，我們從新概念三冊中了解到sacred主要有這樣兩個含義：
1. connected with God or a god; considered to be holy
e.g. Cows are sacred to Hindus.
牛對于印度教的人來說是神圣的，是不能作為食物的，它們是神的化身。
2. very important and treated with great respect
e.g. For journalists nothing is sacred (= they write about anything).
對于記者來說，沒有什么是不能寫的。這里的sacred和宗教沒有關系，可以理解為就像宗教一樣不可隨便接近的。
就后面那個意義來說，已經去掉了宗教的意義，所以日常生活中都是可以用到的。
比如The Great Gatsby 中接近結尾的時候有這樣一段：
He put his hands in his coat pockets and turned back eagerly to his scrutiny of the house, as though my presence marred the sacredness of the vigil. So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight—watching over nothing.
他把兩手插在上衣口袋里，熱切地掉轉身去端詳那座房子，仿佛我的在場有損于他神圣的守望。于是我走開了，留下他站在月光里--空守著。
這里sacredness是sacred的名詞形式，意思不變。什么叫做the sacredness of the vigil呢？vigil意為守夜，整夜地監視。整個短語翻譯為神圣的守望。在小說的這一段，蓋茨比和黛西乘坐的車撞死了人，黛西受到了驚嚇。于是蓋茨比一直不放心黛西，簡直要遠遠地守望著黛西所在的房子。這是怎樣的一種愛，是純潔到幾乎不忍沾染的。所以，“我”才會覺得自己最好不要呆在那里，自己的在場是不應該的，就好像一個不信教的人不敢隨便踏入教堂一樣。
我們從以上的例子中知道了，sacred這一詞其實并沒有那么sacred。在自己的作文中不妨也試著用用看哦~
