昂立外語【新概念培訓】分享 今天分享appetite這個詞，相信大家都知道一句法語Bon appetit “祝你有個好胃口”。注意！在法語里為appetit，而在英語里則是appetite。appetite是一個從法語延續到英語里的單詞，意為“胃口”。
下面來看個幽默短文：
At a dinner party a shy young man had been trying to think of something nice to say to his hostess.
At last he saw his chance when she turned to him and remarked, "What a small appetite you have tonight, Mr. Jones.
"To sit next to you," he replied gallantly, "would cause any man to lose his appetite."
是不是覺得這故事很熟悉呢？其實這和我們新二里的Lesson40 Food and talk很像，都是餐桌上發生的趣事。
lose appetite 指“失去食欲”，也就是我們常說的“倒胃口”
appetite也出現在Lesson 78 The last one? 中：
I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking: a bad temper and an enormous appetite.
enormous appetite 巨大的食欲
其實appetite除了指“胃口”這個和吃有關的意思外，還可以指“欲望”
需要注意的是，作“胃口”時為不可數名詞，作“欲望”時則為可數名詞。
常用搭配有appetite for sth. 對...的欲望
e.g. his appetite for success 他對成功的欲望
分享一段莎翁作品Twelfth Night《第十二夜》里的經典對白：
If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess(超額) of it, that, surfeiting(飲食過度),
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
假如音樂是愛情的糧食，那么奏下去吧；
盡量地奏下去，好讓愛情因過飽噎塞而死
（這里的appetite指上文提到的love）
最后分享泰戈爾《飛鳥集》里的一句話：
Do not blame your food because you have no appetite.
不要因為你自己沒有胃口而去責備你的食物。
