這一片文章昂立外語【新概念培訓】跟各位同學分享crack這個小詞。比如說新三Lesson39有這么
一句話：
Bruce went into a low gear and drove at a terrifying speed, keeping the front wheels
astride the crack as he followed its zigzag course.
【注釋】：這句話中的crack是該課詞匯表里的生詞，在這里用作名詞：a narrow opening
(Webster)，中文譯為：縫隙。這里指路面上的裂縫。
crack這個詞在這篇文章里只用了它的基本意思，并未深挖。
事實上crack還可以作為動詞，表示：
to break (something) so that there are lines in its surface but it is usually not separated
into pieces
或者：
to hit (someone or something) hard and usually suddenly
如：(1) The hailstones were big enough to crack some windows.
(2) He cracked his collarbone in a skiing accident.
看看這么個不起眼的小詞，有沒有大放光芒的時候呢？
He took his seat, asked if there were any old patients for him to see, rapidly passed them
in review, looking at them with shrew eyes as he discussed their symptoms, cracked a joke
(at which all the clerks laughed heartily) with the H.P., … (Of Human Bondage, Maugham)
這段是主人公在一家醫院實習，遇到了一位主治醫生，上文引用的這一段就是描述這位醫生的。
而回到本文，crack作動詞的時候基本意思是“裂開/撞擊“，無論如何都沒法跟“笑話”（joke）
搭配。那么做何解釋呢？
學習詞匯最好的辦法是先融入語境，這里既然跟joke搭配，且括號里補充說了：“所喲員工都哈哈大笑”，就說明，這位醫生在診所里“講了一個笑話”。
朗文詞典中特意列出了該短語，并做了如下解釋: crack a joke: (informal) to tell a joke.
短篇小說巨匠O Henry的作品Confessions of a Humorist中有這樣一句：
I was expected to crack jokes about the crockery and lighten up the granite ware with
persiflage.
經由我們上面的解析，這句話是不是特別好理解了呢？
這篇文字講的是一個很幽默的速記員，總是講很多笑話，逗大家開心。久而久之，大家就一直期
待他每每開口必有笑點。
所以在這句中，crack jokes依然是跟幽默有關，查詢詞典，發現crack 有一個特別的搭配用法，
即：crack a joke即表示：tell a joke.

多么好的用法！
噓~其實crack這個詞真的不止這么2個用法了，他還可以作為形容詞，Webster解釋為：
very good : of excellent quality or ability
比如：He was known as one of the college's crack tennis players.
